Whole Genome Sequence of Paenibacillus polymyxa NPDY05-8

  • Objective Genome sequence and functions of Paenibacillus polymyxa NPDY05-8 were studied to explore the application potential of the bacterium as a biocontrol agent for wheat fusarium head blight and corn stem rot.
Methods Antimicrobial spectrum of P. polymyxa NPDY05-8 was analyzed by the plate confrontation method, sequence and assembly obtained based on the Nonopore third-generation and Illumina second-generation sequencing technology platforms, and gene functions predicted and annotated.
Results P. polymyxa NPDY05-8 showed antagonistic activities against 19 pathogenic fungi with antimicrobial spectra between 62.00% and 92.00%. The whole genome was 5,132,538bp with a G+C content of 45.63%. There were 5,151 genes and 4,949 protein coding sequences predicted that included a plasmid of 226,178bp. The COG, GO, and KEGG databases annotated 3,902, 3,489, and 1,391 genes, respectively. A total of 209 carbohydrate-related enzymes and 11 secondary metabolite gene clusters were predicted.
Conclusion P. polymyxa NPDY05-8 was rich in carbohydrate-related enzymes and contained 4 cellulase genes and synthetic secondary metabolites including several antimicrobial compounds, such as fusaricidi B, surfacetin, paenicidin B, bacitracin, aurantin B, C and D. It appeared to have significant potential for developing as a biocontrol agent.
